Stop eating fat bombs! They are empty calories that will deprive you of important nutrients and keep your cravings for sweets alive.
I know the rational behind keto fat bombs. They supposedly help people achieve their precious keto macros, boosting the fat content of their diet.
But I am very much against fat bombs, and I’ll tell you why:
1. Fat bombs are empty calories. A concoction of coconut oil, an artificial sweetener and perhaps some melted chocolate or nut butter, your typical fat bomb delivers an unfavorable ratio of calories to nutrients.
Basically, a fat bomb is a tasty way to consume fat, but the fat is devoid of nutrients. In contrast, when you eat a fatty steak such as ribeye, the fat comes with the goodness of the steak – red meat supplies us with (to name a few) vitamin B12, zinc, selenium, iron, niacin, and vitamin B6.
2. Fat bombs are not natural. Nature has intended for us to consume fat when it’s attached either to protein (meat) or to fatty plants (avocado, olives, coconut, nuts). Isolating the fat means that we eat something devoid of other nutrients. That’s not what nature has intended for us to do.
3. We should maximize the nutrition in the calories we consume. This is actually one of the main criticisms of strict keto – when you emphasize fat so much, and limit protein, you can actually end up deficient in certain nutrients. Someone can easily consume 500 calories worth of fat bombs per day. These are 500 wasted calories. Fatty meat, avocado or eggs would have been far better choices.
4. Fat bombs are sweet. Eating them trains us to keep expecting sweet tastes. Most of us are addicted to sweet food, and one of the best things about a good low carb diet is weaning ourselves off that addiction. But eating sweet concoctions throughout the day, or even just once every day, keeps the sweet cravings and the addiction alive.
A healthy low carb or keto diet should rely on fatty meat and fish, some cheeses and nuts, low carb vegetables and limited low-sugar fruit. The occasional low carb sweet treat is fine, but in my opinion, if you rely on the daily consumption of fat bombs, you are depriving your body of important nutrients.
